Yeah, I was just advocating for younger people in government.
If you had opted out of social security and invested it yourself, you would have lost everything in 2000, 2001, 2008 and again in 2020.
And whatever you had left would get taken by the hospital. The 401k system was supposed to replace social security. The idea is laughable today. Working people need money for when they can't work anymore, not tax shelters.
Tell me I'm wrong.

Losses on paper aren't loses so you are wrong. Nor do you know how I invest or balance my portfolio. Now, I'm no Oracle of Omaha by any stretch but do ok and I would have survived. Your steadfast belief that the State knows what's better for me is ridiculous. I've bet on myself my entire adult life (financially). I've done better than most.
But keep cheering for the ppl who steal your money and continue to borrow against & spend it unwisely.

Losses are losses. Show me somebody anybody who put their nest egg in Wall Street and ever saw that money again. Not every casino has table games but the house always wins.
The only way you or I are not going to see a dime of social security is if that money is stolen by the type of people that you're inclined to vote for.

Investing <> Wall Street only. There's real estate, investing in small businesses, commodities, shit... high yield savings accts over multiple decades. And now there's crypto (not my bag). And fuck me, if I lost it all....at least I lost it. I'm accountable for my poor choices.

None of anything you listed is a retirement plan though. How am I supposed to take care of my parents and manage a business and have invested cash at the same time? Even if I could, is this your answer for everybody? Why?
Social Security has been humming along just fine as prescribed by law for decades. It's the most popular government program by a mile and the taxes that would support the benefit increases and lower retirement age that I want would be miniscule to non-existent.
I truly wish we looked at defense spending the way you want me to look at social security. Did you know the defense department is going to run out of money on September 1st? We'll have to cut the department.

And just as you are delusional with some of your policy dreams, so am I.
It is both ignorant and unrealistic to expect a first world country to operate without some social security net policies. There will be people physically, mentally unable to work bc of disease, injury, way they were born etc... and just those that have shit luck.
The Government borrows against Social Security. Now, the law states that these "loans" must be paid back with interest. At some point the Government is going to have to pony up with real paper.
I also believe that smart people do not make a career out of politics. Maybe after they have become Titans of Industry and want to wield a different type of power, sure.
Why not consider the two-birds / one stone approach. You and your side are constantly bitching about big corporations not paying their "fair share" of taxes. My lunatic fringe hates everything the state does or says, has no faith in them at all. I think we can agree upon that...I hope.
In lieu of the cat and mouse game of paying an insane tax rate, inventivize these huge corporations to run, maintain and most importantly fund these programs. Basically have the business people who are experts in well, business and making money pay fewer taxes to the Fed and run these non-profit social programs. Now, obviously there are some flaws in this idea and would require massive guard rails so some coked up fool doesn't bet it all on Black but I'm will to try anything other than just government.
And yes, slash the Fuck out of the DoD budget. And then slash it some more.

So we agree that there should be a social security system, we're just haggling over features and prices.
I don't think tax dollars should be used to entice people to do things. Tax dollars need to come with a mandate.
As for the debt bit, it'll never be a problem so long as uncle Sam has the ability to get the money. Nationalize the oil supply and move on.
To borrow from Biden: Everything we're talking about is within our capacity. We just have to decide to do it.

Unfortunately, in today's world with today's technology the only way to reliably do this is from within the system through either reform or distasteful methods like we've seen the Republican party employ in the last 15-20 years.
If you want to start a war against the US Gov't, by all means, you do you. But it wouldn't work.
