Like when you guys say; "debt doesn't matter".

Debt only matters on a personal level. It doesn't matter on a national or international level particularly when you're the single most dominant country in every single aspect that matters.

We control the world economy more or less. And there's a reason that every country or leader that attempts to move away from fiat currency to a gold or silver standard ends up like my boy Muammar Gaddafi.

On a slightly related note: Still my favorite authoritarian leader of all time. Dude just had swag and his military bodyguard unit comprised entirely of extremely fine Libyan women was utter perfection.

It's not your fault. You were just hanging out with the wrong people. Lot's of people fall into conservatism at your age. All those hormones can be confusing and lead you off the path.

But when the US credit rating takes a hit, it does affect interest rates at a personal / family / business level.

Those hot ladies did little to stop things from ending badly for your boy, Gaddafi. Ouchie.

But at least the open slave trade market is back!

I don't know too many conservatives that sincerely want to see it all burn to the ground. But definitely lean more right than you two yahoos but that is not exactly hard to do. I believe this issue is more than I am a capitalist even though we really don't have a free market.

I'm just teasing.

If you wanna have a big boy conversation about conservatism, I'm here for it. That was the point of the "post Trump GOP" thread I made across the street.

Prematurely as it turns out.

Yes, the US Credit rating matters but the debt doesn't. The US will literally never default on it's debt purely by virtue of the fact that we're an incredibly massive part of the global economy. For us to default, the countries that own our debt would have to call for it to be paid, which they won't do because if they did and we defaulted it would destroy their economies just as quickly and thoroughly as ours. And that's if we don't just answer that request with an extreme show of force.

My ultimate feeling on nation-states having credit ratings at all is that it's a fucking stupid, pointless practice and that the S&P can go eat a bag of dicks. Corrupt douchebags.

I mean, I said they were hot, not effective combatants.

Not sure what open slave markets have to do with the global economy outside of proving my point that any country that attempts to stray from the US Dollar hegemony gets either demolished or becomes a pariah state a la the Norks.

I'm a socio-capitalist. We're not so different. I just think that the benefits of capitalism should be used to serve the people, not make individuals like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos worth tens of billions of dollars.

I believe in the ownership of private property, I believe in having a sensibly regulated free market (read: not toothless but also not a bloated mess), and I believe in taxing the ever loving fuck out of the ultra wealthy and megacorps. One area in which my views differ greatly from the American concept of capitalism is that I am against the idea of growth for growth's sake and the significance of quarterly earnings. Things would be so much better in this country if both corporations and the government took the long view towards viable sustainability rather than rapid growth at all costs. (Think of the shareholders!)

Edit:

Biden is calling for national rent control. Annual rent increases capped at 5%.

I don't know what the enforcement mechanism is. A lawsuit I presume.

I bring it up because I know Pete is going to be opposed to it from a property rights perspective, and I know jack shit about rent control.

The enforcement mechanism is tax penalties.

Edit: Allow me to clarify, it isn't actually a tax penalty. If you're a landlord that owns 50 or more units and you raise rent by more than 5% per year you lose existing tax benefits given to landlords. That number of 50 units or more comprises a little more than half of the rental properties in the country.
